• The barrier generally must be at least 20 inches from the water's edge
• Pool gates must be self-closing and self-latching
• Gates must open outward from the pool area

There are specific provisions for situations where the residence itself forms part of the pool enclosure. Depending on the property, requirements can include a separate barrier, a qualifying motorized pool cover, or safety measures for doors and windows providing access to the pool.

Pool Safety Is More Than a Fence

A properly installed pool barrier is an important first line of defense, but Arizona health officials also recommend additional layers of protection.

The Arizona Department of Health Services recommends constant, undistracted supervision of children around swimming pools, along with effective barriers, swimming and water-safety education, and CPR/first-aid training.

Homeowners should also regularly check:

Pool gates: Make sure gates close and latch properly every time.

Pool furniture and toys: Keep anything that could potentially be used to climb over a pool barrier away from the fence.

Pool covers: If you use a pool cover as part of your safety system, make sure it is properly designed and maintained.

Emergency equipment: Keep lifesaving equipment readily accessible and consider having CPR instructions and emergency information available near the pool.

Supervision: Never assume swimming ability, flotation devices, or swimming lessons replace adult supervision.
